BEAUTY OF JOSEON RELIEF SUN: RICE + PROBIOTICS SUNSCREEN REVIEW

If you are someone who follows asian beauty then you will already know of the cult favorite Beauty of Josean Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotic sunscreen in my latest review. But, is it worth the hype? As with many sunscreens it all depends on your skin type and the time of year you are using it. An spf you tested out in the humid summer might not work for you, but come a dry winter it might be wonderful. Beauty of Josean makes many of my favorite products.

What is it?  Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics Sunscreen(SPF50+ PA++++)

According to Beauty of Josean’s website, “Relief Sun is a lightweight and creamy type organic sunscreen that’s comfortable on the skin. Even if you apply a large amount several times, it is not sticky and gives a moist finish like that of a light moisturizing cream. Containing 30% rice extract and grain fermented extracts, it provides moisture and nourishment to the skin.”

Ingredients in Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics (SPF50+ PA++++)

Chemical Filters- Filled with next-generation chemical filters they don’t use in the US yet.

•           Uvinul T 150:  A new generation, chemical sunscreen (not available in the US due to impossible FDA regulations) that gives the highest photo-stable absorption of all available UVB filters today.

•           Uninul A Plus: A new generation, chemical sunscreen agent (not available in the US due to impossible FDA regulations) that’s designed for high UVA protection and high photostability

•           Tinosorb M: Tinosorb M – a new generation, “hybrid” (between physical and chemical agents) sunscreen that gives broad-spectrum coverage and is highly photostable

•           Iscotrizinol/Uvasorb HEB: A chemical sunscreen agent. It protects in the UVB and UVA II range (but not in UVA I) It’s particularly suitable for water-repellent and water-resistant formulations. Regarding photostability, it is super photostable. It loses 10% of its SPF protection abilities only in 25  hours when 2 hours counts already as “photostable” in the world of chemical sunscreens.

Other Ingredients

The main ingredient is 30% Rice extract and grain fermented extracts. Beauty of Joseon explains, “Rice and grain fermented extracts are rich in vitamins B, C, E, amino acids, and minerals which help to moisturize dry skin and comfortably calm the skin.”

•           Anti-acne/ Skin brightening:: Niacinamide ( helps with hydration & skin barrier)

•           Antioxidant: Tocopherol( Vitamin E which strengthens skin barrier), Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract( Green Tea), Monascus/Rice Ferment, Panax Ginseng Root Extract

•           Cell-communicating ingredients: Niacinamide, Adenosine

•           Exfoliant: Lactobacillus/Pumpkin Ferment Extract

•           Skin-identical ingredient: Glycerin

•           Soothing: Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract

How does the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics (SPF50+ PA++++) Perform?

•  My Skin Type: At the moment of writing this dry due to using tretinoin.

• Protection: SPF50+ PA++++

•   Texture: It is like a light moisturizing cream,

• Finish:  On me it is matte. For others, they say it gives them a nice dewy glow which I didn’t have on my skin.

• Works with Makeup?: No. I tried this with so many of my tints/foundations that work on my dry skin due to tretinoin. But, it just made makeup pill. And, caused patchiness.

• Fragrance/Scent?: No

• Does it contain alcohol? No. It doesn’t contain any drying alcohol.

Is it drying?– Yes/No. I need to apply a moisturizing serum below it for it to work. On its own when I apply two finger lengths of it caused it to feel dry on my face upon application. There was that tight feeling. So, if you want it to feel more hydrated apply a moisturizing toner/serum underneath.

• Does it sting the eyes?:  No. I don’t put SPF near my eyes. But I judge how an SPF stings my eyes and how it affects my eyes when I wash my face. I don’t sweat so I don’t have issues with SPF going in my eyes on hot days.

• Does it leave a white cast? No. It rubs into the skin easily

• Irritation or breakouts? No.  I didn’t have breakouts while using it.

Final Thoughts on Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics (SPF50+ PA++++)

PROS  Didn’t break me out/ No fragrance or alcohol/No white cast/Sinks in nicely

CONS- While on tret this doesn’t make my face feel hydrated enough/Didn’t work well under any of my makeup as it pilled and made makeup patchy

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF 50 is a widely popular SPF. But, on my dry skin due to tretinoin, it was not hydrating at all. I want my spf to be super hydrating, sink in fast, leave a nice glow, and work with most of my makeup bases. I did like using this on its own and I plan to use it up. Maybe, it would work fine on my “normal” skin type whenever I take a break from tretinoin. It did work nicely in hot and humid temps of the summer in general.
