Located off the coast of Cape Cop is the island of Martha’s Vineyard. So, since I was staying in Hyannis, I had planned to take a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard from Cape Cod. While walking around, you tend to see people wearing lots of Lily Pulitzer and Vineyard Vine clothing. ( which are my favorite stores, so I felt at home.)
How to get Martha’s Vineyard
Well, the first way of getting there is by flying into the airport on Martha’s Vineyard. Both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket have small airports. But, if you are like most people you will probably take one of the ferries to Martha’s Vineyard. I took the High-Line Ferry from Hyannis. Visitors can get a ferry from Hyannis, Falmouth, Providence or New Bedford. If you are visiting from Boston, it’s a one hour drive to Woods Hole, and from there you can hop on a ferry that usually takes less than an hour.
Getting Around Martha’s Vineyard
I’d recommend everyone to take one of those guided bus tours of Martha’s Vineyard to get an idea of what area you would like to walk around.
The island has six towns each with its own vibe: Oak Bluff, Edgartown, Chappaquiddick West Tisbury, Chilmark, Aquinnah, and Vineyard Haven.
It’s very hard to get around most places in Martha’s Vineyard without a car. But, they have a great and easy to use the bus system. I used the bus to go down to Edgartown.
Places to See in Martha’s Vineyard
1. Oaks Bluff
If you are coming to Martha’s Vineyard on a ferry, chances are you will arrive at Oaks Bluff port of entrance to the island. There are an abundance of restaurants to pick from in town, and many stores to shop at in this area of town.
2. Edgartown
On my super short trip, I only had the chance to walk around Oaks Bluff and Edgartown. The town is a historic Whaling Captain Village. The houses all have to be painted a specific way, and be a certain color white. Edgartown had many fun stores, and restaurants to choose from on my trip.
3. Visit The Cottages
The Cottages look like are little dollhouses straight out of a storybook. They are so cute and colorful. Why are they there in Martha’s Vineyard. Well, in the mid-1800s Methodist came to Martha’s Vineyard for meetings in the summer and stayed in tents. Later on, they replaced the tents and built cottages. People still own and live in those cottages today.
4. Visit Gay Head Light House and Aquinnah Cliffs
Gay Head Lighthouse was first lit in 1856 and sit’s upon a beautiful cliff. The tour bus I was on dropped us off here for a short visit.
5. Go biking around Martha’s Vineyard
If you love biking and want to explore more of the island, go biking. There are bike rentals located at Oaks Bluff.
